INDIA COMES TO TAIWAN’S HELP IN SENDING VACCINES TO ITS ALLY PARAGUAY

Highlights:

•        India sends Covaxin to Paraguay

•        China was trying to cut off Paraguay from being allies with Taiwan with Covid vaccine dosages

Taiwan which already has a strained relationship with China found itself in deep waters due to China’s pandemic diplomacy. Paraguay is a Taiwanese ally and they have been receiving the Chinese coronavirus vaccine. Taking this opportunity to pressurize the South American country to sever its ties with Taiwan, China promised Paraguay more consignments of the vaccines if Paraguay breaks its ties with Taiwan.

This has forced Taiwan to help out its ally and have asked India to help. India in turn has sent consignments of Covaxin to Paraguay; the first batch of 100,000 doses has been shipped while another batch of 100,000 will be sent.

China has denied the allegation of trying to entice countries with its vaccine. China now faces India, the US, Japan, and Australia as a joint force who have signed a “billion-dollar vaccine pact”.
